Wartime ‘Incident’
civilian casualties
The policeman looked at me silently, solemnly,
rocked with questions that might even
be answered. He looked stunned
with the misery of discovery; light
filtering through chasms of despair.
‘If everyone said “No” to war
there would be no war,’ he said,
but the lamb was slain before the
foundation of the world.
The unquestioning sun gleamed through
the windows of all that was left. There
was an air of untalking, a terrible closeness,
a futility of silence nothing could penetrate.
The last correspondence I had from Donald, who had been a staunch supporter of Acumen since its inception, was a submission of poetry stating that this would be his last as he was now feeling very tired and too old for such things. I read the poems and chose the following, never realising how apposite it would be, both as a tribute to Donald and to the world situation. - Editor.
