Lagoon
for Jean Schuster (1921 - 1996)
As if you could take a patch of light
and place it on water – spotlight
of moonlight, rippling lagoon-light
the silence of egret, of heron.
I have carried it along the eastern seaboard
from a lake in upstate New York, where
children watched fires in summer,
ran barefoot under shooting stars,
and from a wood in Massapequa, Long Island,
at the bend before traffic lights.
Children bicycled in straw hats,
balanced fishing rods across handlebars,
imagined the Mississippi. Eventually
it alights here, where palm trees
adorn either bank, though in darkness
only the fiery ripples can be seen
dancing and dancing,
as if they could ever extinguish themselves.
