Car travelling in the south of Ireland in the year 1856.
A picture of perfect ancestors.
One, two, three trees flash by;
on the road at full pace the four black horses
carry the passengers through a lost universe where
the fields are flashes of naked green
where the wheels turn exactly
where what was expected occurred because this was merely
logical.
Five men and a driver and two women and large trunks
piled up behind them
and one wonders what any of them would do should one of those
immaculate wheels spin off break down crack up
one wonders how many of the men would take off their hats and
say what a fine mess it all was and why had they come in the
first place:
but they had come and the wheels were doing just exactly what was expected
of all well made wheels and the driver looks as fresh as a prefect and
no damn bird is going to dive too low and no rain or chill winds will
prevent the full pace continuing
for the Grubbs of Tipperary are out and about
and there’s no such thing as a grey day or a long way
or
a horse that breaks its heart and dies.
