To All Smokers Now Sneaking a Butt Somewhere Illegal
It tastes better, doesn’t it?
Hiding in a hospital toilet stall,
leaning out the window of an uptight hotel’s suite,
in her living room when she’s not home.
They make the stupid rules so that
you and I can feel like individuals
breaking them, feel like kids again
—playing hooky, driving fast, being
where we weren’t supposed to be,
not hurting anybody, secretive and cool.
As history has taught us, the oppressed
have the right to create their own freedoms,
but discretion is the essence of success
—flush those butts, air out those rooms.
