Your Flat in London
You painted
this room faint,
dusty yellow. Mist. You hung
calico curtains, home-made,
hand-printed
with gold eight-pronged stars
far apart. You stripped
the frames, skirtings, doors
to white-flecked light-golden pine.
Above the darkness
of the Victorian fireplace
you placed
a long horizontal of mirror:
drab gold, baubles, pillars,
a trinity of cherubs.
Your past of making a place
home for one.
I can smell your sweat. It makes
me ache, the thought
of your body
I’ve not known yet, or perhaps
your eyes
catching your eyes - staring
from the cherub mirror.
