Magma Showcase: Jane Routh
View Over Burnmoor
He’s walking where a cobalt wash shadows
burnt sienna on the moor, a small figure
five hundred yards away, not everyone
would notice. You’ll see him more clearly
at the end of the day when low sun
works up the fields’ flat slabs of ochre
into vivid planes. I’ve watched him for years
there, under that hill shaped like a hoof.
You won’t see him at night, not even
when I leave curtains open for a Hare Moon.
In the dark he no longer haunts
the brushstroked distances; he must
double-back along the lampblack gulley,
vault the top bar of that gate, then drop
– quick and quiet as a spider on the lino –
into my kitchen. I keep a mug of tea poured
ready on the table. That’s the Old Road
you’re on, I’ll say, tell me how long it took
from here to there; put me in the picture.
