You Know the Story
You know the story of the man who
in the impulsive moment in prayer
alone in the ancient chapel rises
from his knees and thieves
the sandstone carving of the saint
with his fingers raised in blessing,
prising it away easily but sweating
from its makeshift modern putty
in the niche in the sanctuary wall
and takes it home under his coat
and with his heart thumping hides
it away in the wardrobe wrapped
in the warm blanket behind the shirts
and the socks, behind the neckties
and the trousers and the jackets
and the christmas decorations,
behind the cricket whites, you know
this story, how it continues and ends.
Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible.
