Prodigal
Father gave my sister his prayer shawl
after she came home with a gold Star
of David that she’d acquired in New York.
I had no idea it existed, never noticed
its shades in the assortment of cloth
in the top sock drawer. Now Naomi
has given me music, Klezmer from Krakow
that tears me inside out to the beat
of a past I didn’t know that I had.
Alone in the living room I wonder
what the hell it is he has given me
as I dance and wail at the same time.
