Evidence
Someone agreed to clear the field of headstones,
but, presuming unknown grief,
left this exemplary memorial.
The son killed down the pit at twenty,
his mother living on for thirty years.
Now, fifty years gone,
kids his age have cracked the stone in two
breaking their Christian names,
picking away at memories
fast falling in on themselves
now the pits have closed
and no more deaths are needed.
