To See the Heron
To see the heron rise
detaching blue from the blue
that, smoking, lies along
field-hollows, shadowings
of humidity: to see it
set off that blaze
where ranks of autumn trees
are waiting just for this
raised torch, this touch,
this leisurely sideways
wandering ascension to unite
their various brightnesses, their fire-
music as a voice might
riding sound: risen
it is darkening now
against the sullen sky blue,
so let it go
unaccompanied save by the thought
that this is autumn and the stream
whose course its eye is travelling
the source of fish: to see the heron
hang wondering where
to stoop, to alight and strike.
