Flightless
On arrival, settlers from the East
Are given new titles
They are called Displaced Persons
The name eradicates the exotic
New words,
Belonging lost home
Stick to their souls, stir change,
So they become like birds,
Who having migrated,
Keep low and never sing
But hide amongst buildings
Stunted armless trees, that implore heaven,
And give shelter, for birds
That gather and search for roots,
Flightless birds, who bathe in dust
While every homing instinct is axed.
