An intruder's legacy
One night away from home
was all he needed.
Followed by grey fingerprinting dust
and, at a distance
the calculating prowl of an assessor.
Still more distant
the tiny flickering light of red
cased in plastic
in every far corners of every room
monitoring time
responding to legitimate movements
and domestic life.
His echoes reverberate
through locks
that changed three bars to five
through windows
dropping keyed brass ornaments
and outside
the lights that flooded the night
each night
no matter what the stealth of cats.
