John Clarke
Geography
you know of
glaciers rivers streams
you can explain
their discreet inexplicable descent
indelibly marking altering
the landscape
evidence of being there once
and you
were once there
descending
leaving striations
meandering through
land flesh
you know of
migrations populations famines
the silent innate practices of
leaving bearing children going hungry
yet you yourself have done none of these things
our seaswept peninsula
was a land of spilt seed
upon a barren earth
a land of the attrited declaration words evaporating
a descent of a togetherness
halted by granite
liquid rock in our hands
today the air and land is light
unburdened by ice
