The Small Yard (Portsmouth)
In the small yard
a neat row of sheets
is pegged on the low line,
too heavily folded to flap.
A boy, bent double
is mending his bike,
his sister, her face screwed to the sun
is hugging a doll like a madonna.
Oil from her brother's bike
slicks a rainbow on the path.
Red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, indigo, violet.
He has taught her the colours.
Sometimes she would turn
a skipping rope and chant
but not here, not in this small space.
Instead she croons softly
squashing her baby to her breast,
rocking her small body
while her brother tinkers with his bike;
the washing remains furled.
The wind chivvies no square-riggers here.
