The Only Good Bosche
(May 1944)
The German hand that held the pin
squeezed shut as the shell breezed in -
blurting blood through a gapen chest
he relaxed among friends, and took his rest.
But soon the fist that held the pin
clawed out as rigor mortis set in
and digits cold as any blade
unclenched the frustration of the grenade.
Passing Highlanders who had dealt the blow
gutted, utterly, by the time-lagged throw.
Thus the vanquished in deep malignant sleep
find ways, yet, to make the fireball speak.
