Oh! there is an organ playing in the street - a waltz, too! I must leave off to listen. They are playing a waltz, which I have heard ten thousand times at the balls in London between 1812 and 1815. Music is a strange thing.
1821
George Gordon, 6th Lord Byron (1788-1824), died 150 years ago last April 19th. His anniversary was celebrated at the Victoria and Albert Museum until very recently by a large exhibition devoted to his life, times and impact on succeeding generations. Cecily Lambert has written the following piece, devoted to one of Byron’s many relationships, in celebration of this anniversary of a man who, if not one of Britain’s greatest poets, is certainly one of this country’s writers with most influence on the Continent, as well as being one of its most interesting personalities and a letter - writer of genius.
