Julian Flanagan
Between Rounds
I ambled outside the wedding-eve pub
half full of lace-veiled pints
and out-of-city ease.
Across a black field
the village bent down a loose arm of houselights
gathering in a farm.
A combine harvester shouldered into the street.
It claimed both lanes,
the driver at bedroom height
his eyes dispassionate with fatigue.
He paused,
sizing up the hedgerows of night houses,
then herded the flat land roar,
the wide acre angles, through, just.
It passed into the deep lane
toffee apple lights tailing.
The buckled land had seen it all before -
the industry of swollen fields, the late homecomings -
and only tightened the silence a notch,
topped up the dark.
