A wild day it was, with a sea wind blowing
right to our inland roofs and grey skies pierced
by gulls’ white arrows
forming battalions, wheeling, screaming. One
had claimed my neighbour’s aerial and stood
neck stretched forward in King-of-the-Castle posture,
shouting defiant warnings.
Perhaps they’re taking over the world, I thought
(slightly worrying, but one has to accept these things–
go with the flow).
So I was quite disappointed when after hearing
the news (Southern Region) that a seagull had been appointed
as some concern’s new manager,
I discovered that after all it was The Seagulls’
(football club) new manager in question,
one Steve Gritt replacing Jimmy Case,
and seagulls, to my knowledge, don’t have names
like that.
