My Favourite Husband
He was the one who took me to New York
for lunch, at Grand Central Station
where we sat down to oysters and baby clams.
Florence is where we named our daughter,
over a plate of pasta, with wild mushrooms.
Earlier he wooed me at The Young Friends
Chinese Restaurant on the Mile End Road.
My mother always said there was something
fishy going on behind her back
in our house. Was it just a salmon
being poached? He was the one
who brought me back from Barcelona
a string of Chorizo sausages, a pig’s trotter
from Modena, that place in Italy where they make Ferraris.
Standing in the kitchen, you look incredibly like him
in that striped apron, stirring
a risotto made with stock
from Sunday’s roast duck, only
then, he was a little slimmer.
