Lots of traffic for a small Holiday.
I'm a hood away
from a baby blue Geo
with local plates, a young blond
sitting pretty behind the wheel.
On the rear bumper
it says - if you're living like
there's no God, you better be right,
bold face like it's an original concept.
Plato had original concepts,
Voltaire, Locke, Camus.
Camus spoke to me once in a dream.
I know I know -
I was fourteen, just finished
L'Étranger. Meursalt - a live fish
on the hook of my mind,
Kerouac, Corso on that ride.
Camus died on my sister's eighth
birthday. She's a forty-eight-year-old
welfare mom with a daughter
on welfare, two grandkids on welfare.
She believes in God.
Maybe God forgot her
with all the confusion
of born agains, bumper stickers,
prayer broadcast on the Internet.
