World War Won
They were almost asleep, he was, when the groaning approached
overhead. “Oh God,” he said. “Here comes World War One.”
“What...? Oh. Yes!” She was smiling.
“Did I ever tell you,” he asked, “my father was a pilot in that one?”
“No, I don’t think so. You’re funny,” she said.
“Well,” he said, nuzzling the perfect arch of her neck, “let’s hope I can keep it up.”
“I don’t care !” she said, spread out before him in all her soft touchableness. “I don’t care ! You could be a mushroom, and I’d still love you. You’re funny,” she said.
“A mushroom ?“ he said
“Or a book.”
“A book !”
“Yes. I’d open your pages and kiss every one.” She turned toward him.
“Thank you,” he said “You’ll need a bookmark ?”
“Thank you,” she said, and kissed every one, over and over, until, finally “What did you say your father was ?”
“A pilot in World War I”
“And you ?”
“A navigator in World War II.”
They were almost asleep, she was, when the groaning reapproached overhead. “Here it comes,” she murmured. “A pilot-navigator in a war not yet begun but already won.”
“You’re funny. Later,” he said.
