So... I needed a place to stay.
It happens. Leases expire,
landlords return from New Zealand,
floods, fires, volcanoes, acts of God.
It could have been anyone,
wandering with their worldly goods
along the ridges of Penestanan,
lost and open to suggestion.
You know how the old men are,
the landlords of Penestanan on Leo's steps,
murmuring in Balinese about
cock fights, the Mon-Cris and us.
Should I have said to them...
Oh no. How could I possibly?
After what I’ve said about that man.
I could never live in his house.
Anyway, they moved me in,
assuring me you had vanished.
But on your porch, I talk to you.
In your bed, I only have to whisper.
