Here is the Room
Here is the room. It shines, it breathes its scent of night flowers
so as not to intrude on thought or sleep or conversation
with oneself. Much light, but filtered, perhaps through marble
cut to inch-thin amber stillness. When dark’s needed
one can draw screens of stained glass, glass the colour of
Icelandic ice-floes, Galician green, or the slow mauve
of autumn sunlight just before horizons slip away.
If words are longed for, all words, spoken or unspoken,
are walking down the mind’s wide corridors
informally, as friends who come and go
but don’t live here. The host is silence, who has arranged the room
with such slow sweetness, there is really nothing more to say.
Ones lives here. Not I or you, but one for whom
personality, attributes, and all desire and pain
have simply dropped and fallen away, and disappeared, or become
the scent of night flowers.
