Steps
Cloth-capped farmers
spitting on deals
men down from the mountains
to the weekly fair -
a great grey gelding
broke its tether
ran wildly through
the narrow streets
eyes wide, mouth foaming
before collapsing
in a heap of legs
piss and dung:
a few men gathered round
poked it with sticks
spat and walked away
children kicked
at the muddied flank
and you took me down
from your shoulders
made me walk crying
across its body
stepping back
from dying flesh.
