Marcelin Pleynet was born in Lyon in 1933. He was Managing Editor of the influential magazine Tel Quel from 1962 to 1982, and today co-edits the journal L'Infini (Gallimard) with Philippe Sollers. Since 1987 he has also been Professor of Aesthetics at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. The poems published here are taken from his most recent book of poems, Plaisir à la tempête (Carte blanche, Paris, 1987), and are reprinted with permission of the author. His other books include Fragments du choeur (Denoël, 1984), the novels Prise d'otage (Denoël, 1986) and La vie à deux ou trois (Gallimard, 1992), in addition to numerous volumes of essays and studies in art history. Serge Gavronsky teaches at Columbia University, New York; his publications include the novel The German Friend (Sun, New York, 1984) and many translations and studies of modern French literature. The interview with Marcelin Pleynet will appear in a forthcoming book entitled Ecriture: the French Mind. Guy Birchard lives in Saskatchewan, Canada, and is the author of Neckeverse (Galloping Dog, Newcastle, 1989) and Birchard's Garage (Pig Press, Durham, 1991). His work also appeared in the second issue of this series of Shearsman.
