The end
Mother finally confessed
it slipped out.
All those years
why she had married father
and why she had stayed married.
“Of what people said.”
She sighed breathing a hiss.
Neighbours neighbours
what would they think.
“I hate people looking
and counting and coming with five.”When father finally left
she faced it squarely.
“It was on his mind since ’69.
What can I say?”Father had booked a one-way flight.
“I’m returning.
Oh the British weather and there
is nothing to do I am useless here.
I’ve nothing to do.”He got into a temper and emptied all
the cupboards of food.
He terrifies us with his temper.
Then took our money.
He tried our patience.
Then he told me the reason
he wanted to marry again. The cascade of seeing
misery and madness plain silliness
and despair at growing older.
Out of the cocoon of despair
Daddy is gone and there is only madness.
