There Used to be a Hospital for Broken Dolls
Ever had that feeling
at the top of the steps
to Platform 9, in a busy station,
when your train is about to go;
that feeling of gravity leaping up,
snatching at your ankles,
iron handrail dodging your numb fingers;
when you know,
as you know the drag of bag on shoulder,
that the moment you place that first step
your feet will betray you;
you will slip down thirty–two
concrete right angles,
crack open
just at the small of your back
that brittle column
of message and mobility,
feel St. Pancras
shatter into
a grey kaleidoscope?
