Editorial
Like a recipe, forgotten about for some time, that suddenly re-occurs to you, here it is: Smiths Knoll 10 at last. Delayed perhaps by our choosiness - we wanted to mark reaching double figures with a particularly tasty issue - but also because you haven’t been sending us enough good poems.
So bear us in mind. Remember what we offer: we’re still normally dealing with submissions within a fortnight, so we won’t tie up your poems. You can always give them a run with us between competitions.
We go on offering constructive criticism when we can, because we want to print better poems, and our comments seem to be appreciated on the whole - allowing for the creep factor.
We don’t stockpile poems, so you can count on seeing your accepted poem in the next or, at worst, the next but one issue.
Our pages are open to anyone - there are no passwords, no masonic handshakes, only what we take to be good poems. In our first ten issues we’ve published some five hundred poems by two hundred and sixty poets. Twenty-two of the poets in this issue are appearing in Smiths Knoll for the first time. Widely published poets; familiar names from other magazines; and absolute first-timers. We’re very glad to have space for them all.
We’re glad too to note the growing number of first collections from poets we’ve published. It means we’re doing the business: helping poets along, stamping their passports.
So keep the poems coming, the ones you’re most excited by. We can’t do without them.
