Goonhilly Downs in the Mist
Goonhilly Downs in the mist
and indistinct voices sing settlement,
a mock cloud runs over heather
and gorse towers to leaning trees.
No sheep to forage in grey,
no lined ponies or all-leg foals
to drink from the sweet-water trough,
no distant children’s echo.
Cars reveal the eyes of night foxes
snaking the bushes of lane,
running hollow on thunder grass
to their peaceful sleep in the light.
