Moussorgsky’s ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’
(In my rented bungalow)
Promenade/In the Tuilleres Garden
People around here are friendly.
Total strangers knock on the door
and the bungalow invites them in.
They accost the boy on his pot,
rolling marbles trying to trip them up.
‘I’ll help you dad,’ he shouts.
Once I found him with his pyjamas
completely stuffed with cushions
looking grossly overweight, saying,
‘Because I thinked of it.’
I thought of the years not dancing,
all the useless hours not playing,
unable to remember if I missed it,
afraid of my oversights, his losses.
If the bungalow could laugh it wouldn’t.
Small as he is, he’d make a fine sapper.
I’d enlist him for the resistance.
This mess with the pictures can’t concern him.
I’d go to him, I’d drop what I’m doing.
I’m knocking on the door. I’m still knocking.
