Sporting Pals
From Weetabix to Horlicks
we're rarely apart. We share
an eclectic taste in music,
sporting trivia of all denominations.
I follow him about the house,
treading fluxing interest rates
and slightly stale one-liners
into stain resistant carpet.
His wife calls me the shadow,
his siamese twin; threatens
to unsplice the arteries
that feed us to each other.
My telescopic halo channels
tongues of all persuasions.
I bring him enlightenment;
the gift of transmission.
In the static between World at One
and rain-stumped Test matches,
his feet discover Jazz FM;
the joy of improvisation.
I am his right hand man -
he reaches for me in dreams,
my cat's eye sparks in the dark,
simmering; a familiar
she cannot substitute
with toilet water and cold creams.
