lord john looks back
Lines written
to the
memory
of them.
Such grey moss
governs
the sundial,
numbers,
precision,
gone, mere
tracings, blurred,
who, when,
a kiss hung
in air,
a sweetness.
Dark casts
unbelief,
sense of
grim wonder.
Vestige
remains of
form to
tantalise -
name cut
the bark has
started
to misshape,
flowerbed
running wild
or the
footprint I
try my
returning
one by -
fossil hours
with no
meaning, the
texture
has changed past
recall.
Night now. Pace
the ground
turned frost-black
round me.
Star patterns
offer
only the
senseless
glitter of
distance
cold and lost
in the
sharp branches.
Bronze ghosts
departed,
all that
lent purpose
gone with
the magic,
nothing
but dead thoughts
staying
to comfort.
Walk back
alone now,
spell past,
woods empty.
