Bush Telegraph
The seventh of autumn -
been here four months
this continent with dark glasses on.
Fifty Othellos to my Desdemona.
The Moors of Mhalalume
look so majestic at work in the fields.
As I sponge off in my bath
in this Nissenville of huts,
my sister forever holding my hand,
my father in his camping beard
watch voyeuristicaIly
from a dartboard of photographs.
I shall make them come now:
Harare, Bulawayo, Plumtree.
Fifty kilometres from where the wide tar meets the dirt.
Fifty minutes away,
down corrugated ridges of road,
past the zebra crossing for wild dogs.
I stample my foot. Is it time
to bring out the vin d'honneur
and flag them down in my poppy-red skirt?
