Cliff Yates
Naked The Philosopher
Pale, thin and naked, the philosopher
stands in the door of his flat, yawning.
His exams are in two weeks. It’s twelve noon
and his teeth are still in the glass.
His mushrooms have left
their gro-bag.
In his hot dark room they sprout
white between books.
Midnight, he leans against the door frame,
muttering. Three am he’s playing chess
with the lad drinking vodka,
eyes watering in thick smoke.
He’s the one without the invitation
but on every picture. On this one
bride and groom either side the oak,
he’s top right, bending at the waist,
reading the words on the stone.
