Marie Marshall
one day in the death of mal
her box-lid cracks a silver hint of lemon-lick
and mal kick-starts the schpul of life again
the annealed armour of self-confidence
stress-fractured (her fingers trace the long lines)
her flat-footfalls sounding on the bathroom floor
I walk like a duck therefore I am a duck
and today I shall fly south for the winter
on a comme-ci-comme-รงa day like this
mal will strike the attitude of Alasdair MacDonell
while the Glengarry wind keens her name
the raw sky's red aspect forbids soaring
her breakfast toast has a far-off scent of forest-fire
because it is a Friday all things will fall
and over-full trash-cans are avatars of God
this is a spiritless world all work and no play
her head bruising on her softest pillow
the damson-dark crack of the box-lid fading...
