Curry O'Shea 1958 - 2012
Curry O'Shea, who died this year, was an accomplished artist and musician who contributed for many years to Homeless Diamonds. Two versions of the Virgin Mary and Child were on the covers of issues 8 and 9 in 2009, and the text on art (below) appeared in issue 10 later that year. The lyrics of “Ethiopian Blues” were published in issue 13 the following year. In winter 2011 a disk was included in the issue, and Curry contributed two original songs accompanying himself on guitar.
When Café Art was launched in 2012 Curry lent his artwork to the programme. He is pictured here at Oliver's Café in Belsize Park where his version of van Gogh's Sunflowers illuminated the room.
Curry often worked from prints of art works that inspired him – Renaissance and religious art, Impressionist works (especially van Gogh), Georgia O'Keefe and even the Flower Fairies from the classsical children's books. His artwork and his music was ambitious, large scale, passionate and accomplished.
Yet as a person Curry was a quiet and modest man, communicating often by no more than a smile or a twinkle in the eye. His gentle presence will be much missed by all of us at Homeless Diamonds.
