Pentimento
After a painting of the River Thames by J.A.M. Whistler. Pentimenti are alterations made by an artist during the process of painting, which years later show through when the paint thins.
The tides rise and fall back, like breath.
Gulls pad out across mud-flats.
A bridge yokes the banks.
In the foreground a boy is fishing,
the thin, vertical line of his rod
bisecting dusk;
upstream, the ghost of another figure
emerges, dredged to the thinning surface
of the Thames by the passage of time,
exposing the artist's moment of uncertainty -
how he paused, loaded his brush.
Then changed his mind.
