Ferry from Ward's Island
you have turned your eyes
from the suburban cabins, the tamed shore,
the towers of the new city,
have filled the harbour with lilies,
slipped into clear deep water,
into the still days of that kinder country,
those slow mornings of longing.
this is a shorter journey:
the iron gates at the ferry dock have opened
and now you must take subway and streetcar
to the corner of Bay and Dundas, to the airport bus,
carry the rolled landscapes across continent and ocean
so that you can nail to the wall like a trophy
the flat lilies and birches
the water frozen impossibly blue green.
