Sprouting Seeds
These quiet moments, rinsed
clean and sharp with sunlight,
swilling out the seeds in jam jars
at the kitchen sink.
Watching the sprouting lentils
waltz and dizzy down in whirling water,
waving their small white tadpole tails.
Alfalfa seeds like tiny pebbles
rocked upon a tide - beginning to
bristle surprisingly white fronds.
And creamy yellow chickpeas with their
wise, avuncular faces starting to
look pointedly - some have sprung
unicorn horns.
Then draining off the water
which falls like clattering
rope. Tucking a towel around
the incubating jars, where they
are left to nudge and grow.
And I go on to meditate -
to settle myself on cushions,
wrap myself in cloths -
and wait in the dark.
