for the painter Nicholas Horsfield

1.
light arrives in the harbour
like a monarch at a painter’s door
the brush poised to trap
like a lobsterpot.
2.
apple-orchards moult pink into summer
an excitement of melon against green lawns
the haze of sardines grilling
hydrangeas pushing in at the night window.
3.
paint glitters like mackerel spilt on the quayside
the breath of ferries and fishingboats
caught against an impasto of cliffs
framed in an oval sunset.
4.
burnt sienna scumbled against zinc white
where only the green-capped stones, gaunt as Frankenstein,
remember the suck of boots,
the crunch of landingcraft.
