Blood
It's like you dip your red pen
in heart's blood
and scrawl across the page
big jagged letters,
gut-slashing words:
blue menopause, barbed wire sandwich, razor burn.
You slap poems up on walls
like revolutionary slogans,
a freedom fighter
dodging army patrols:
DEATH TO CAPITALIST HENCHMEN,
LET THE BIRDS OF THE PEOPLE FLY.
You're Pollock for the day,
seriously hungover
from last night's booze, trying to thrash the pain out
by splashing words all over
the floor, rolling in the paint.
You mock how I do it.
The way I shower and shave
and dress in clean clothes
then sit like a fucking monk, you say,
copying some damn parchment,
neat little, pretty little rows
of grey words. Where's the blood in them,
you say, where's the blood?
