At the poetry 'showcase'
Solemnly he took the mike each time without
a thankyou and read out
rhyming pieces that showed
no delectable talent.
As the meeting thinned and people
visited the bar he was up
each chance he had
to treat those left to
more of his trivial ditties.
Ted was disposed to laugh
but later I wondered if there wasn’t
something to the bloke, something
about the angle of his glasses perched
on his snout
and in the dogged way
he sat at the back later
ploughing through a bag of peanuts
with downturned mouth and sipping
at a brew of weird
beer- -
might there not
be in Howard
something like to overturn a world?
