Three-Way-Piece by Henry Moore
(from The Eye of the Beholder, stimulated by paintings at The Atkinson Art Gallery)
Hitler hated modern art, and more
especially he hated Moore, bombing
his studio in the 40’s, missing
him by a whisker and moving him
to Much Hadham, a name to conjure with
if nothing else, a place of peace and quiet
n the midst of carnage, where our hero
could get on imparting a moving
and telluric character to his
biomorphic forms, the shapes
and formal relationships to express
similar ideas at widely different
places and periods in history, a Cycladic
stone figure as a Nukuoro wooden statue
never forgetting the problems
of humanity, while putting loads of
dosh where it belonged, n his bank.
We have to thank him for innumerable
public works commissioned throughout
the world and for bringing a new
impulse to British art, a monumental
dullness to sculpture the like of which
had not been seen before in someone
of his eminence. It’s said he liked
Brancusi, now there’s a piece
that I would like in my jacuzzi.
