Griselda
Griselda stands at the window
in bitter cold.
She sees her mother, in firelight,
singing a doll to sleep.
The doll has Griselda’s face.
The frost bites to the bone.
‘Mother’, cries Griselda,
‘mother, let me in!’
Her mother, moving quietly,
lays the doll to rest,
smooths the coverlet,
turns down the light.
‘Mother’, cries Griselda,
‘let me in!’
What is this face at the window?
‘Go away, ragged girl’, says her mother.
‘Can’t you see my child is asleep?’
