To a purple angel
God sent His Purple Angel
To the high halls of my mind;
Scattered dark confetti
In the prison where I pined.
And on a jewelled table there I dined
Amidst the blinkered anguish of the blind.
Christ cast a simple violet
On the wild sea of my heart.
Oh, she was dark and lovely,
And she was warm and kind,
A perfumed Purple Lady set apart,
A guardian angel never to depart.
The Holy Ghost glanced down
With great compassion on my soul,
And from a shadowed dungeon,
Love's pauper from the start,
I offered up my lowly beggar's bowl -
And in it was the golden heart she stole.
'Twas like a golden apple, and
She feasted on my heart.
Her purple wings they fluttered,
And her love it made me whole.
Compassion's wings embraced me from the start,
And thus it was that God inspired my art.
The violet is still blooming
Through the night and through the day,
Truest love eternal
Inscribed on heaven's chart.
An angel's wings had pierced the clouds of grey.
With faith in Christ I bowed my head to pray.
In those high halls of Heaven,
Where no man's heart is cold,
I kissed the Purple Angel
Who caressed my cares away.
By Holy Ghost our names were then enrolled
In purple script upon a page of gold.
