Wake
You’ve brisked off leaving a slick of stubble,
a few drops of piss on the rim, some new
fingertip bruises on parts that won’t trouble
the inquisitive, a smeared mirror, one or two
stains on the pillow, grit on the kitchen floor
and ten canes for a wigwam by the back door.
We’ve exchanged books, opinions, bodily fluids
cooked fish and potatoes, shaken a salad,
put ice in sherry, pepper on strawberries,
listened to the blackbird, watched videos
strolled Paddy Lane and Spindle Wood,
searched the web for times of trains and ferries.
Your wake settles, the house rocks into balance.
The opposite of singing isn’t silence.
