Getting Away
At last we’re off the motorway
and slowing to a view of hills,
glint of an estuary unravelling
to the south. And this is what
we left the city to discover -
the verges white with hawthorn, cows
in the fields, small furry creatures
squashed along the carriageway -
announcements of the countryside.
Now we can look out for nature trails,
for picnic sites; get out the books
on birds and flowers; pull on the boots,
the wind-proof clothes; plan a good walk
to some place with a pub for lunch;
let loose the dog; find out which gardens
serve the best cream tea. Tomorrow
we can relax - sleep late,
go somewhere with some decent shops.
