Commandant
This man
with tapered shell-smooth fingers
strides through the wire,
sun-burnished rifle
hooked nonchalantly over
broad cattle back.
This man
with velvet-razored neck,
with lick and sheen of hair,
floats whistles over the prisoners’ heads,
heavy with challenge;
they seek out stones,
their lives dependent.
She aches for stars in the dirt.
This man
with steel and sapphire eyes,
who washes his hands with their blood,
snags her breath;
and she hates him
and he knows it.
