Things That Don't Happen
Solid and uncrusted, higher than two people,
metal sheets cut shadows onto long grass.
The fence slabs stretch, vast as a stadium.
The twelve o'clock sun burns
and restrains all movement, hushes the few birds.
On the hills above, the motorway, silent as if gagged, melts.
The walls enclose a box of tiny windows.
They reflect the late afternoon back at itself.
One is open; a missing tooth. A radio escapes through it.
The rising moon turns trees into grey skeletons.
The fences are either massive silver
or an absence in the night.
This place appears on no maps.
People are not brought here in the night.
There are no interrogations here.
