Lunar
There is no water on the moon, no sound of it:
Valleys of deafness, giant crania
Split and upended to contain the glare
Of white-cold light reflected.
Untouchable and untouching, in weighted gear,
Those who walked here have left behind
The tread of bootprints going nowhere:
Wind cannot ruffle or weather stain
The flag they planted in this desert whiteness,
The star-ray that catches the unmoving ensign
Iridescing with the colours of a world away.
